TO WHOM THIS MAY CONCERN,

My name is doronda mckoy and i am a current student at bookre t washington hs. every year in febuary we have a multi-cultural assembly reflecting the many different culturals we have at our school. on the last day of this week we show the african american cultural. this year a couple of students including ourselves noticed that there was nothing in the assembly pertaining to african americans, and nothing else planned to even reconize that this is BLACK HISTORY MONTH!!!!! we gathered a couple of seniors as well as some concerned juniors and set up a meeting with the assistant principal Mr. Woodson, to explain our concern. he was not able to join the meeting so we were sent to the 2nd ass. principal Mrs. Stacy. during this meeting we expressed our concerns as well as asking how come nothing was even being done for black history month. she listened to us but made it quite clear that she was not incharge of our assemblies. so we asked could we read off some "today in black history facts" everyday on the morning annoucments. she reflected that this was a great idea and that we could start the following day. when a fellow student, dionne buxton and i went to show that assistant principal our black fact for that day for us to read off on the morning announcments he basically brushed us off saying that he was not informed about this and to, quote,"slow your boat!"
now we are currently waiting for this meeting, we are still highly dissapointed and mad! we do not undersatnd how a school that was based on the african american community not realize that a matter this big was being over looked. we as students should not have to bring this to our administration, this should be somrthing that is already in place. i as a student wanted to inform you on what was going on at your alma-mata. we hope that you share the same concern as us, and will inform your fellow alumni.

sincerly, doronda mckoy c/o 07

Doronda, it is indeed a honor to see our newcomers of the (B.T. Washington) body stress for the administration to honor our Black History Month, as a almuni of the class of 1981 I will make sure my classmates know what is happening and we will also voice our opinion to the administration of our black history school
(Booker T Washington High School), because as I see it they have taken enough from our hertiage school.

thank u for taking notice in our situation. you'll be glad to know that our students refused to attened class today until our voices were heard! after about 5 min, we was granted our meeting. in this meeting we disscused how black history has been over looked in this school. we were sucessful in moving multi- cultural week out of febuary next year. we also have 2 assemlbies planned for this month as well as being allowed to read off "this day in african american history facts" everyday.

Students Complain There Aren't Enough Black History Month Events
Monday February 12, 2007 3:34pm Reporter: Bill Mitchell

Tulsa - Students at Tulsa's Booker T. Washington High School say there are not enough events to celebrate Black History Month. NewsChannel 8's Bill Mitchell went to BTW Monday, where the principal says the complaints came because the students didn't know what was being planned for February.

Dr. Debi Boyles says this was a classic case of miscommunication. When the students came their with their concerns, she worked out the problem.

There are 12-hundred and 50 students who attend Booker T. Washington High School, a magnet school and one of the best in the country. It was the black students who complained about too little being done for Black History Month.

"We would like to say that we would like you to be involved and we would like to create whatever events you are interested in seeing," Boyles said. "And, I think a lot of that has been miscommunication."

One of those events is called 'A Taste of Africa'. It's part of an assembly about America's multi-cultural history. There will be more events like this one later this month.

"They've got some good plans," says Melvin Gilliam. "But, the problem is the kids didn't know about it."

Gilliam is a 1985 graduate of BTW. His daughter is now a junior there.

"In the past, Black History Month was a huge, huge event," Gilliam says. "It wasn't just a couple of days. It was a month-long affair. As the years have gone, things have changed, kids have changed. It's just not the same."

He says it is up to today's kids to make sure the school knows what they want for Black History Month.

"I tend to see kids now more reactive, saying it's not there and why not, this is what I want."

Boyles says if the alumni or students are concerned about events during Black History Month, all they have to do is see her first. She says that will eliminate the failure to communicate.

"Please help us get in touch with Doronda. From what I'm hearing the kids are taking some unwarranted flack from some TPS employees at BTW."

Doronda, please email us, we would like to speak with you. We are alumni.
