B.T. Washington Hornets nearing their groove

By LYNN JACOBSEN World Sports Writer
4/10/2006

The team is getting back to the form that led to a 6-1 start.

B.T. Washington is about to get its groove back.

The Hornets got off to a 6-1 start before injuries and illnesses decimated John Potocnik's starting lineup. Now 10-9, Washington is looking to get into playoff shape.

Senior outfielder K.D. Radford was sidelined with mononucleosis and rejoined the team two weeks ago. He went 4-for-7 in limited duty in the Bixby Tournament.

Pitcher Jeremy Webster, the top hurler from last year's team that reached the 5A semifinals, missed two weeks with a hand injury.

"He got sawed off on an inside fast ball and injured his hand," Potocnik said. "It was similar to the injury Mike Wilson struggled with when he played here. We got Jeremy a pad to wear on his hand, and he seems better. We're better when he leads off for us."

Freshman Colton McKenzie has returned from a broken clavicle and should spell three-year starter Justin Baney behind the plate.

"With Colton back, we can use Justin on the mound now," Potocnik said.

Senior Ian Vancuren moved from outfield to shortstop to shore up an injury-plagued infield and third baseman Jack Lamareaux is just now back after suffering a back injury last spring.

The injuries, though, haven't been the biggest blow.

That came from the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association, which placed the Hornets back in Class 6A due to the school's average daily membership.

"I thought we had a chance to get back to the 5A state tournament this year," Potocnik said. "Being back in 6A kind of caught us by surprise. We always knew there was a chance. Hopefully we'll move back to 5A next year.

"We got off to a great start. We looked good in scrimmages and started the season 6-1 before the injuries hit."

Kalen Dougless has been a consistent performer on the hill and was 3-1 as of Thursday.

Freshman Hank Born has taken his opportunity to play during all the injuries. He plays first base when not pitching.

"He has really helped us this year," Potocnik said. "He's eating up some innings for us on the mound."

Notebook: Locals to compete

By JOHN D. FERGUSON World Sports Writer
4/12/2006

Booker T. Washington's Rebecca Parks is not the only player competing in the prestigious Easter Bowl tournament in California. Classmate Milo Johnson will compete as will Tahlequah sophomore Travis Fillmore. Johnson won the Class 4A No. 1 singles title a year ago, and Parks did the same on the girls side.

Hornet soph shines: Booker T. Washington's Tynesha White continues to excel in hurdles. She won the 100-meter hurdles Friday in a meet at Choctaw. Her time of 15.0 seconds is the third-fastest in Class 6A this season. White finished second in the Class 5A state meet last year. Washington moved up to 6A this season.
