Track (edited from Tulsa World article)

Moving up: Booker T. Washington won girls state championships the previous two seasons. Three in a row will be tough.

During the offseason, Washington moved from Class 5A to 6A. Classifications are based on enrollment. Class 6A includes the state's 32 largest schools and the toughest competition. Washington has the lowest enrollment in 6A.

"We've got some work to do, but we're going to be OK," said Washington coach Greg Nash, who's in his 17th season at the school. "You have to put in a little bit more time, and the competition is a little tougher. All I ask the kids to do is compete to the best of their ability."

Sara Vaughn is among Washington's top athletes. The sophomore won the 800-meter run at Union's meet March 17. She finished in 2:23.97, Class 6A's fastest time in the event this season, according to ohstrack.com.

The Union meet illustrates the difference between Classes 5A and 6A. Washington was the top 5A team in the meet. But overall, Washington finished fourth -- behind 6A schools Union, Jenks and Broken Arrow.

Milo Johnson, Washington's 2005 Class 4A No. 1 singles champion, is sharpening his tennis skills at a California academy. His status to defend his Oklahoma crown was not known.

Big meet set: Tulsa's largest high school tennis event, the Metro tournament, will begin a two-day competition Tuesday at various sites.

The boys bracket will report to the Jenks High School courts and also play at Jenks East Intermediate and Graham Park. The girls will report and play at LaFortune Park Tennis Center.

The boys bracket will report to the Jenks High School courts and also play at Jenks East Intermediate and Graham Park. The girls will report and play at LaFortune Park Tennis Center.

Redskins host tourney: Union High School will host a 16-team tournament beginning April 28. The Redskins have the top player in the state on their roster in senior Blake Boswell.

Union, defending 5A champ, has other good players. No. 2 singles player Eric West (8-0 this season) and freshmen doubles specialists Ryan Proctor and Trevor Horstmann make the Redskins a force.

Union already owns a tournament title by winning at Ardmore earlier.

Cascia accolades: The Cascia Hall boys will again be led by No. 1 singles player Patrick Collins and No. 2 Chris Gordon.

The Commandos drew a compliment from another metro coach, who asked not to be identified.

"They are going to be good for several years," the coach said.

Cascia Hall has won four straight boys' championships and appears strong for a fifth for first-year coach John Parker.
